Shiretoko peninsula in north-eastern Hokkaido is a pristine land of untouched natural beauty, making it one of the natural treasures of Japan. An extraordinary eco-system, home to unusual flora and fauna and the seasonal forming of sea ice, the central part of the peninsula and the surrounding seas were designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
